Itchy, dry, cracked lips (Perioral Dermatitis) – cured naturally

I have been struggling on and off with itchy, dry, cracked lips (called perioral dermatitis) for several years now.
It started with dry, scaly lips that didn’t seem to get better. Recently it’s escalated to an itchy, burning sensation deep inside the lip which quickly turns into a swollen, bumpy rash with more itching and soreness. At first I thought I was getting a cold sore – mine start with an itch under the skin on the lip. But it didn’t turn into a cold sore.
A dermatologist told me to use a steroid cream to settle down my itchy, dry, cracked lips, but from experience I know that steroid creams aren’t the long term solution. I’ve had autoimmune problems for many years. I suffered with scalp psoriasis for 5 years, so I know the western medicine drill.

About beeswax

Protectant

Acting as a surfactant, beeswax, when blended into cold creams and other skin lotions, forms a protective barrier on the surface of the skin. This barrier, according to Koster Keunan, a global organic wax supplier, provides a film of protection against irritants while still allowing the skin to breathe.

This barrier may also aid in protecting the tender skin on your lips. The Mayo Clinic recommends using a lip balm that contains beeswax during cold weather to reduce your chances of developing chapped lips.

Skin absorbsion

In our increasingly polluted modern world, it is important to do all we can to avoid increasing the toxin load in our bodies. More and more people are choosing to eat organically grown foods and drink clean water, and many people choose to use all natural skin care products as well.

While it is easy to understand why we should choose organically grown foods, just how important is it to avoid synthetic ingredients in body care products?

An understanding of the nature of skin, and how ingredients in skin care products might actually penetrate the skin to be delivered into the blood stream, can help us see why it is imperative we avoid synthetic ingredients at all costs.

SPF – sun protection factor

Some natural oils offer SPF protection from the sun that is better than protection found in any commercially produced sunscreen – and it’s chemical free!

Shea Butter – not an oil but derived from the fat of the shea nut. Shea butter melts at body temperature and absorbs rapidly into the skin without leaving a greasy feeling. It contains the antioxidants, vitamins A and E both of which enhance skin cell regeneration and promote blood circulation below the skin’s surface. Cinnamic acid in the oil provides vital protection against harmful UV rays. Its rich emoillient quality maks it excellent for very dry skin. SPF 6-8

Psoriasis treatment

Psoriasis is an auto immune disease, and sufferers are often genetically predisposed to the condition.

It is an extremely annoying and persistent skin disorder which is difficult to completely eradicate.
AS OF JANUARY 2016 I’VE BEEN FREE OF SCALP PSORIASIS. I attribute this to my change in diet, use of my natural shampoos and conditioner, avoiding stress and practising yoga regularly. Yay!!!

There is no known cure for psoriasis and sufferers often are extremely debiliated by this disorder, restricting their daily lives in many ways.

Natural sunscreen by beepure

Our sunscreen uses our basic skin cream with zinc oxide added to make a SPF20 product that is perfect for everyday use for the whole family.
Excellent as a facial moisturiser to provide mild sun protection from incidental sun exposure during the day.
Please note that this is NOT waterproof and must be reapplied after swimming, exercise or any activity that might remove it.

Great for the whole body – face, hands, arms, shoulders, legs.

Please note that exposure to the midday sun will result in your skin burning, especially in summer.
Avoid the midday sun and try to minimise exposure. Do not sunbake or use tanning beds.
The harmful UV rays of the sun damage the skin, cause premature aging and can cause skin cancer.

Skin creams and body lotions by beepure

Our skin cream uses the finest beeswax and oils with rainwater and essential oils added.
Ingredients include extra virgin olive oil, beeswax, shea butter, palm oil (certified sustainable), rainwater, rosehip oil, vitamin E oil, evening primrose oil, natural preservative, ylang ylang and patchouli (or other essential oils).
The resulting cream is quite thick and creamy.

Because the skin cream contains water, the product is susceptible to mould and bacteria. Therefore the shelf life of the product is reduced considerably and it is recommended that it be used within 6 months. It is also recommended that the cream be kept in a cool area away from sunlight and heat. This will improve the longevity of the product.

The short shelf life is one of the tradeoffs of using completely natural ingredients and it is why we keep the containers small to reduce wastage.

THIS IS A NATURAL PRODUCT THAT WILL ONLY LAST AROUND 6 MONTHS.
When not in use, keep in the fridge or in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.
To avoid cross contamination, always use a clean stainless steel spoon or toothpick to dip into the cream – never your finger!
As soon as mould or discolouration appears, throw away the remainder of the product.

As a northern beaches girl, I’ve grown up under the harsh Aussie sun and have the skin to prove it! I’m passionate about natural skin care products that will nourish, moisturise and hydrate the skin and be good for the entire body.

Several skim balms are also available – white salve and comfrey balm. These are made without water so have a long shelf life. They are very useful to protect the skin and to help treat psoriasis, eczema and irritated skin conditions.

Lip balms by beepure

We only use pure, natural ingredients – no artificial preservatives or parabens. Our body products are safe for all ages**

Lip Balms

Our natural beeswax lip balm has a lovely honey aroma and doesn’t need any flavouring. The most popular lip balm contains beeswax, olive oil, evening primrose oil and rosehip oil (vegan alternative is using soy wax).
Beeswax is particularly beneficial for chapped, dry lips and a great treatment for chellitis (chronic dry lips). It softens the lips and helps with exfoliation.

beepure lip balm is a smooth, long lasting balm that nourishes your lips while keeping them moist and protected.

The additional medicinal benefits from the oils in the balm help keep your body well oiled.
Most of the oils also offer some natural SPF (sun protection factor).
Soy wax may be substituted for beeswax if you are allergic to beeswax or if you’d like a vegan alternative.

We all know that what we put on our skin is absorbed by our body. With lip balms, we actually ingest a lot of it, so it makes sense to ensure that it is pure and natural and contains no harmful ingredients.

Skin creams and body products

The skin cream and body lotion is a great treatment for sensitive, dry skin, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis and many other skin conditions. It keeps the skin moisturised and hydrated to prevent itching and flaking. Read more about my recommendations for psoriasis treatment …
The lotions contain a little beeswax to seal in the moisture and oils and to protect the skin from the environment. Beeswax softens the skin and is naturally healing. Other ingredients include extra virgin olive oil, soy wax, rainwater, rosehip, evening primrose and vitamin E oils.
Because there are no artificial preservatives used, the shelf life of the product is around 6 months after opening. The vitamin E is a natural preservative and the product will last well if kept in a cool, dry area.
The skin cream is a rich, intensive treatment that can be used several times a week. It is a little more oily on the skin and is ideal for face and hands (but can be used all over the body).
The skin lotion contains similar ingredients to the skin cream but has the consistency of sorbolene and is ideal to apply to the whole body after a shower.
Various fragrances are available such as ylang ylang, patchouli, lavender, rose geranium or a combination of these.

Soaps

Our soaps contain extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, beeswax, palm oil (certified sustainable), rainwater and various fragrances. Some also have natural exfoliants such as oatmeal, orange rind, lime rind, dessicated coconut, lavender flowers, rosemary and thyme leaves, all of which have their own gentle fragrance.
The soaps are sold in a block form weighing around 30 grams and feel luxurious and pampering.

Bar Solid Shampoo Bars

Our bar shampoos contain the finest ingredients for the hair and scalp and can help treat conditions such as dandruff, psoriasis, eczema, alopecia, thinning hair and baldness. They can contain olive, castor, coconut, palm (certified sustainable), grapeseed, sunflower, rice bran, sesame, sweet almond oils. Some also have natural exfoliants such as oatmeal, orange rind, lime rind, dessicated coconut, lavender flowers, rosemary and thyme leaves, all of which have their own gentle fragrance and are extremely beneficial for great looking hair.
You may wish to use a conditioner after using the shampoo, especially if you have longish hair. I’d recommend my solid hair conditioner bar.
The shampoos are currently made in a 30 gram or 17 gram disc shape.

Deodorants

Our deodorants are completely natural and contain no aluminimum. Please note that they do not stop you perspiring – they stop body odour caused by bacteria.
They contain coconut oil, shea butter, bicarb soda and arrowroot powder and become semi solid in colder weather but warm and melt quickly when they are applied to your skin.
Fragrances available are natural, ylang ylang or patchouli.

Beeswax

Our beeswax lip balm and skin cream is mixed with high grade, certified organic oils to create a soothing, healing and medicinally beneficial skin care product that is safe for everyone***
The beeswax in the lip balm is from NSW and has a lovely natural honey flavour. The beeswax used in the soaps, lotions and creams is an unscented beeswax.
